Life Never Goes as Planned

My own life has been a journey to many destinations. When I started high school, I wanted to be a meteorologist. I held on to my goal until advanced algebra. I realized I was much better at writing and verbal expression than I was x’s and y’s. Who cares where two cars will meet if one leaves LA at 9 a.m. traveling 60 mph and another leaves NYC at 10 a.m. traveling 70 mph.? The odds of needing to know how to calculate that information are slim and none. So, I threw myself into the leadership activities of student government, civic engagement, and English.

Since high school, I have earned a BA in Political Science, an MBA in Business, and a Master’s degree in Divinity. I have been a political operative, a bank manager, a liberal pastor, and an IT consultant. Even though my journey has been chaotic, it has been rewarding.

Why so many changes? Well, that is the way life worked out! As I like to say, shit happens, and you make the best of it. Sometimes it is serendipity. Sometimes it is the universe moving us. Sometimes we are at the wrong place at the wrong time.

For example, we know that Harrison Ford was cast as Hans Solo, but did you know Al Pacino was offered the part first?

Gwyneth Paltrow could have been Rose in the Titanic.

John Travolta was to be Forest Gump. (Tom Hanks)

Molly Ringwald was to be the lead in Pretty Woman. Instead, it went to Julia Roberts, and it launched her career.

Tom Hanks was to be Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise)

Tom Selleck was to be Indiana Jones. (Harrison Ford)

Will Smith was the first cast as Neo in the Matrix. Would we know who Keanu Reaves is if he did not appear in the Matrix trilogy?

My journey helped shape who I am. I could have been more successful in terms of money and position but would I have been as fulfilled? Probably not. It was the restlessness in my soul that guided me. If you would have asked my 18 year-old-self in 15 years you would have obtained an MBA, Master's in Divinity, and become a pastor in a church I would have laughed. Now I just smile because Life Never Goes as Planned.
